FDA Approves Large-Scale Use of AgION’s Silver in Food Service

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has added AgION’s Silver Antimicrobial Type AK to its approved list of food contact substances. This move allows the highest loading of silver allowed by regulation in repeat-use articles such as food collection and storage equipment, appliances, and beverage processing equipment.

The company has a petition pending before the European Food Safety Authority asking for similar authorization in European Union countries.

The AgION Antimicrobial Type AK product is comprised of 5% silver packaged in an inert crystalline carrier. The controlled release of silver ions occurs only in the presence of moisture, offering an improvement over standard organic antimicrobials. The 5% reservoir of silver provides for greater antimicrobial performance under the most challenging conditions, including high water flow, high protein, abusive wear and caustic cleaning environments, according to Ladd Greeno, President and CEO of AgION.

“Many food plants have a zero tolerance policy on spoilage bacteria, and installation of food contact surfaces treated with the AgION Antimicrobial will result in measurable bacterial reductions on these surfaces during the periods between full production line cleanings. This will offer significant benefits to our customers,” said Greeno.
