Fifth Lunar Coin Released by Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint is now offering its Year of the Horse sterling silver coin, the fifth in an annual coin series launched by the Mint to commemorate the Chinese lunar calendar. “This is by far one of the Mint’s most popular series,” said Danielle Wetherup, President of the Royal
Canadian Mint. “Many collectors are eagerly awaiting the release of this coin for their Lunar collections.”
The center of the 92.5 percent silver, 34 gram, Year of the Horse coin features an octagonal 24 karat gold covered cameo depicting the image of a horse. In each year of the series, the design on the gold cameo changes to depict the animal for the year of issue. The twelve animals of the Chinese lunar calendar appear around the circumference of the reverse of the sterling silver coin.
The Mint will produce nearly 70,000 of the Year of the Horse lunar coins, each with a face value of $15. They are available for advance purchase only for $78.88 CAN ($55.65 US) through the Royal Canadian Mint’s network of dealers and distributors or by calling 1-416-293-2788. Delivery will take place in January 2002.
