Two Marconi Coins from Canadian and British
Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint in partnership with the British Royal
Mint are producing a 2-coin commemorative silver set marking
the 100th Anniversary of the first transatlantic wireless
transmission by inventor Guglielmo Marconi. Canada received
the first transmission at Signal MI in St.. Johns, Newfoundland,
heralding the start of the wireless era.
The reverse of the $5 Royal Canadian Mint coin depicts sound
waves traveling from Poldhu, near Cornwall in England, to
St. John's, Newfoundland, in Canada. This bimetallic coin
is sterling silver with a 24-karat gold-plated cameo of Guglielmo
Marconi. It weighs 19.6 grams. The reverse of the £2
British Royal Mint coin features a symbolic rendition of radio
waves emanating from a sundial bearing the year 2001. This
24-gram coin is presented as a bimetallic coin in sparkling
sterling silver - with the golden outer ring coated in 22
carat gold. The Canadian coin was designed by artist Cosme
Saffloti, while the British Coin was designed by Robert Evans.
About 30,000 of each coin will be minted. For information
